CEGO Shirtmaker

Manhattan

Carl Goldberg, the founder of CEGO Custom Shirt, grew up working in his family’s Army & Navy store in Philadelphia when he was a teenager. Carl attended George Washington University in Washington D.C. to study business, then made his way to New York City to pursue the love of fine clothing manufacturing that he developed in his youth. He got a job at Barneys, the iconic department store, then on Seventh Avenue at 17th Street.

After his Barneys stint, Carl ran the special orders department for a men’s suit factory at Driggs Avenue and North 9th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Then he started his own business selling wool. Eventually, he became a shirtmaker, calling his company CEGO, a derivative of his initials.

CEGO started as a custom suit shop, selling suits along with signature shirts, boxers, and pocket squares. But Carl quickly dropped the suits to do what he did best: shirtmaking. He offered on-demand, door-to-door services in the earliest days and would bring his swatches into customers’ Manhattan offices. Now, with 38 years of experience, Carl and his team design and manufacture custom shirts for leading Broadway productions, network television shows, and New York’s most stylish lawyers, bankers, and executives.
