For The Culture NY
In Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, Doris Galarza operates a thriving Latina apparel brand. As part of Made in NYC’s Latinx Heritage Month campaign, we delve into Doris’s story, exploring her role as the CEO of For The Culture NY, where she empowers Latinas and fosters a sense of pride through her uniquely designed t-shirts, totes, and hoodies.
For The Culture NY isn’t just a clothing brand—it’s a celebration of Latina identity, a testament to the vibrant and diverse culture of Latinx people living in NYC. Doris, a seasoned educator, saw an opportunity to break free from the superficial stereotypes that often shroud the Latinx community. Her mission? To encourage Latinas to embrace their individuality, defy societal expectations, and realize their potential through positive and powerful messages that can be worn. “I want others to know that there is room for us to grow and succeed,” Doris says. “We can uplift and empower each other. I want to instill pride in our people.”
The journey began with a powerful design: “Latina On A Mission.” As a teacher, Doris wanted to inspire young girls to be unapologetically themselves, transcending the limitations imposed by society. The t-shirts became more than just pieces of clothing; they became statements of empowerment. Many wearers expressed feeling “seen” when adorned in For The Culture NY designs.
As a Latinx business owner, Doris faced a unique challenge: the language barrier. While she is now learning Spanish as an adult, Doris states, “I want others to know that even though I don’t speak Spanish, that doesn’t make me less Latina.” For Doris, being Latinx is about the culture ingrained within, transcending language. For The Culture NY is inclusive, welcoming the diverse experiences and backgrounds within the Latinx community.
At The Culture NY, it’s a celebration of cultural pride, empowerment, and the limitless possibilities within the Latinx community. Doris Galarza’s journey is a reminder that, indeed, Latinas have the power to change the world.
