Oso Cacao
At Oso Cacao, founder and chocolatier Rigoberto Flores (he/him) channels his love for chocolate, culture, and craft into every small-batch bar. Inspired by Mexico and made right here in New York City, Oso Cacao creates rich, single-origin dark, dairy-free milk, and white chocolates—each rooted in ethical sourcing and deep respect for farmers and co-ops in southern Mexico.
“For me, this business is about highlighting Mexico’s culture and flavors while maintaining a commitment to ethical practices,” says Rigo. Outside of the kitchen, Rigo is an avid runner and a 6-time marathoner, with a deep appreciation for rest, movement, and, of course, great chocolate.
Being an LGBTQ+ business owner, Rigo says, is about visibility and inspiration. “It means using your platform, no matter its size, to inspire marginalized communities and remind others that things do get better.” Though he’s grateful not to have experienced challenges in business due to his identity, he’s conscious of the power his story can carry.
His advice for fellow entrepreneurs? “Take advantage of the free resources available. It’s okay to ask questions—and ‘mistakes’ are opportunities to learn and grow.” That grounded mindset is reflected in Oso Cacao’s ethos: impact comes through giving back, building relationships, and honoring every part of the process—from bean to bar.
With plans to expand Oso Cacao’s reach in the coming year, Rigo is excited to share even more of what he loves with the world: beautifully made chocolate, shaped by culture, care, and craft.
